This file photo from AP just about says it all... Tomorrow must surely mark the beginning of the end as organizers have scheduled "Day Without A Gay" demonstrations to coincide with International Human Rights Day.
Tomorrow's protest is designed to extend the backlash and street rallies that occurred last month after voters in California passed Proposition 8, which overturned a state Supreme Court decision that allowed gay marriage.
A couple of West Hollywood homosexuals (not the ones pictured above) came up with the hare-brained idea and, of course, it has caught on from coast to coast. Now, I'm a live and let live kind of guy, but this is really pushing it. The economy is in the crapper, a few hundred thousand of our friends and neighbors are out of work and people are really going to call in gay?
Can you imagine the phone calls in the morning: "Ah, yeah, boss I won't be able to make it in today... I'm calling in gay." The problem is that the way our wacky laws work, employers probably won't even be able to fire these slackers.
Get this quote from an AP story: "It's extra-challenging for people to think about taking off work as a form of protest, given that we are talking about people who may not be out (as gay) at work, and given the current economic situation and job market," said Jules Graves, 38, coordinator of the Colorado Queer Straight Alliance. "There is really not any assurance employers would appreciate it for what it is."
No kidding? And what the heck is the Colorado Queer Straight Alliance anyway? Is that organization listed in the Yellow Pages?
There's a charter school in Philadelphia where so many of the teachers wanted to take the day off, the number had to be limited since not enough substitutes were available to cover the classes. The teachers who take off plan to spend the day discussing ways to introduce gay issues to their students. A letter to parents went home with students Monday explaining why so many teachers would be out Wednesday.
Toto, something tells me we're not in Kansas anymore...
Employers, just let the calls go directly to voicemail in the morning.
